Symbolic ceremony in Umbria, Italy (5)

If you don’t want to worry about completing documents for a civil or religious ceremony but still wish to have a romantic Italian ceremony this is the perfect choice.

A symbolic blessing is a very personal wedding ceremony which may be celebrated in the most amazing settings such as the outside garden of an Umbrian villa, a medieval courtyard,  under olive trees, in an Umbrian vineyard, within a beautiful Italian garden or wherever you like and it can follow traditional or non-traditional lines.

The ceremony is held by a celebrant who is not related to a religious structure as it’s purely symbolic and most of the time it’s the couple who writes their own text as you have the freedom to personalize the ceremony so that it reflects totally your beliefs and values; the ceremony could also be performed by a family member and it can include personal vows, poetry, songs, pagan or religious rituals.

The symbolic ceremony can be personalized as you wish, but this is the structure most couples use:

  • The entrance of the groom and family with music
  • The entrance of the bride with music
  • The celebrant welcomes the couple, their family and guests
  • The celebrant reads the ceremony written by the spouses
  • Readings of family members and/or friends
  • Exchange of the wedding vows
  • Kissing of the bride
  • Readings of family members and/or friends
  • Farewell of celebrant to the spouses and guests
  • Exit of the married couple – with music

Wedding cardbox tips

Friday, November 22nd, 2013

One small detail that many couples overlook is the card box. That little vessel that’s going to hold all of your wedding cards does not have to be a simple white box.

There are so many unique and fun alternatives that can speak more about your personalities and your wedding theme.

Depending on the style of your wedding,  it could be a birdcage, an old suitcase or a hat box for a vintage themed wedding, a wooden wine box holder for a wine themed wedding, a wicker basket, a wooden box with your initials carved on it, large mason jars decorated with flowers for a country wedding, if you love to travel you could have a globe card holder…….

…………….no matter the style of the box, the wedding and your personality, be sure to provide one as guest feel more comfortable about leaving their card!!

Kelly and James wanted a relaxed, not too formal wedding, and decided to get married with a civil ceremony at the beautiful Town Hall in Cortona, Tuscany.

The celebration of their wedding continued with a relaxed wedding reception in a beautiful old Abbey in northern Umbria, on the Tuscany border.

Even if they knew the area very well, as James’s mum lives here in Umbria, they where looking for a local Umbria based wedding planner to help them plan their Italian dream wedding and chose me,  while they flew over photographer Tom Ravenshear from the UK to caputure the magical moments of their big day.

In Whimsical Wonderland Weddings you can read the full story of their Tuscany – Umbria wedding and view the wedding photos.

Fun ways to entertain guest at your wedding in Umbria

DIY photo booth Todi wedding Umbrian Jazz band Wine-tasting-in-Umbria

Weddings are all about bringing friends and family together to celebrate your special day and even more so when it’s a destination wedding in Umbria, where most guests will stay for at least a few days.

Your guests will already be very impressed with your wedding venue in Umbria, the great Umbrian food and the Italian atmosphere but if you want to add a little extra fun to your Umbrian wedding reception, here are a few ideas:

  • Wine tasting: skip the classic welcome cocktail and host a wine tasting instead with great Umbrian wines, typical Umbrian cheeses and cured meats. Display top picks from the Umbrian wine selection and hire a sommelier to introduce the wines.
  • Photo booth: you can either hire a professional photo booth or make your own photo booth with a picture frame hanging from a tree and some fun props.
  • Jazz band: this is a fun way to entertain guests during the aperitifs, especially if it’s an outdoor wedding where guests talk and drink before the seated dinner.
  • Wedding lawn games: adults too enjoy playing games and you could have an Italian bocce game, a corn hole, a mini golf game, big lawn Jenga game… all these games can be personalized with your wedding theme colour or your monograms.
  • Dance competition: if you have a young crowd that loves to dance, you could host a dance competition with prizes for the winners.
  • Table games: have a different game on each table and post easy step-by-step instructions to remind guests how to play. Avoid those that have a difficult setup or takedown and complicated game play; opt for simple favorites like Scrabble, Checkers, Connect Four, Uno or Sorry.
  • The newlywed game: have the MC at your wedding reception have everyone take their seats at their tables and watch the Newlywed Game show featuring the new newlywed couple. The bride and groom take seats in the middle of the dance floor back to back. Then, either using their own shoes or make up small signboards, give each a bride shoe/board and a groom shoe/board. Then the MC asks the bride and groom a series of questions that each will answer independently and therein lies the fun! To see who answers which way.
  • He Says – She Says game: A way to see how well guests really know the bride and groom. Create a list of favorite quotes and sayings from the Bride and Groom. Guests try to guess whether “he said it” or “she said it”.

There are many other games and entertaining ideas you can come up and it’s important that they reflect your style and that they are suitable for your wedding reception in Umbria.

Don’t forget to entertain children at your wedding, there are many ideas also for them which I will write in a future post.

Wedding cupcakes for wedding in Umbria

Cupcakes Cupcakes wedding Umbria Wedding cupcakes

Whether you’re searching for something out of the norm or are having a more casual wedding, cupcakes are a great alternative to a traditional wedding cake.

Cupcakes are a great wedding idea because they are versatile, come in different colors and flavors and they will add a special fun touch to your wedding.

You can arrange them as you want, as a centerpiece, as wedding favors or using different sizes, heights, types and colors of stands to create a tired cake of cupcakes. They look wonderful and they can become the desert so every guest gets their own piece of the special day.

If you want to do the traditional “cut the cake” you can request a small wedding cake to be placed on top of the stand, which allows you to do the traditional cutting of the cake.

Wedding cupcakes can also easily match any wedding theme and be adorned with trendy decorations.

Cupcakes tend to lend themselves to a much more casual wedding, while a traditional cake is generally preferred for a more elegant event.

Lavender seeds as eco-friendly alternative to rice tossing

Monday, November 26th, 2012

2 4 1

Lavender flowers are becoming a popular replacement for rice or confetti tossing at the newlyweds.

Rice expands inside birds who eat it causing death and many Town Halls and Churches in Umbria now charge a fee for the cleanup of either rice or paper confetti.

Dried lavender flower buds are about the same size rice grains, they smell wonderful and there is no need of cleanup since they are biodegradable and become one with the environment naturally.

Lavender can be placed in cones, small baskets, sachets, or other favor bags for the guest to throw in the air instead of rice as the newlyweds make their exit. The old tradition of throwing rice is intended to give the couple good luck, fertility, and abundance.

This modern day twist represents the old sentiments, but adds a personal touch when the fragrance is released as the guests and married couple crush the buds under their feet.

Another good alternatives to tossing rice are dried or fresh rose petals, bird seed and you blowing bubbles is also a good idea, as no cleanup is needed and it makes beautiful pictures.

Comfort  – Your perfect wedding shoes need to be comfortable, don’t forget that you will walk down the aisle with them, greet your guests, pose for the photographers, walk in them all day, cut the cake and possibly dance with them.
Remember that in Italy, and especially in Umbria. there are many old streets made of pebble stones.
Right heel and height – This is an important choice, as your wedding dress will be fitted to accommodate the height of your heels.
If you don’t feel comfortable with very high heels, I would not try them out the day of your wedding, it’s not the day to experiment!
If you are not used to stiletto’s, consider platform heels, wedge shoes, lower kitten heels or even satin ballet slippers can be beautiful bridal shoes if you prefer flat.

  • Surrounding of your wedding in Umbria – Your shoes need to be compatible with the wedding surrounding, don’t wear stiletto’s if you have a reception in one of the beautiful Umbrian venues with a beautiful but unpaved garden, platform, wedges or flats will save you from sinking into the grass. In Umbria there are many streets with pebble stones, so if you are getting married in a Town Hall, consider also walking on them in your shoes.
  • Colour of your wedding shoes – Your wedding shoes should match your wedding dress, the style of the wedding and your personal style. They don’t need to be the colour of the dress, they could also match with the colour of your bridesmaid’s dresses or your wedding theme.
  • Don’t buy them last minute – You will need to bring your shoes to the dress fittings, so that your dress will be of the correct length. I always suggest you buy them before coming to Italy. I know there are many beautiful Italian designers, but maybe you can buy another pair of shoes to wear after the wedding.
  • Allow a fair budget – If you pick the right shoes you can use them again for future occasions, so even if you splash a bit it’s not wasted money and you make sure you will be comfortable the day of your wedding. The last thing you want is to walk around with cheap and uncomfortable shoes that undervalue your wedding dress and hurt your feet!
  • Treat your feet – Schedule a relaxing pedicure before your wedding day, you will feel at your best with your soft skin, neat cuticles and freshly painted nails!
